Mukul to contest from Tura seat for LS polls, Vincent from Shillong
SHILLONG: The opposition Congress has decided to field former chief minister Mukul Sangma as its official candidate for the Tura parliamentary seat and sitting MP Vincent H Pala for the Shillong seat in the April 11 – Lok Sabha polls.
Informing this here on Wednesday, Congress spokesman Himalaya Shangpliang said on scrutiny of the four applications recommended by the state Congress, the AICC high command felt the need to request Mukul Sangma to consider fighting the elections.
“Accordingly Mukul Sangma applied his mind and he has agreed to take the ticket and to fight as a congress candidate for Tura parliamentary seat,” Shangpliang said.
The four names recommended by the Meghalaya Pradesh Congress Committee (MPCC) include two MLAs Zenith Sangma and Winnerson Sangma, former Williamnagar MLA Deborah Marak and state youth wing president Richard Marak.
As for the Shillong seat is concerned, the Congress leader further informed sitting Member of Parliament (MP) Vincent H Pala was unanimously selected to again be the candidate of the party for the Shillong seat.
Asked, Shangpliang expressed confidence that the Congress will win the Tura parliamentary seat, which was held by late Purno A Sangma for past many years in the upcoming Lok Sabha polls.
“Sangma is a tall leader of the state and also a leader of the whole North East…we all look up to him as one of the most senior leaders and therefore with such a stature that Sangma holds, I am sure and I am very confident that the Tura seat will go in the hand of the Congress,” he said.
