Muster roll workers to stage statewide strike from Feb 24
SHILLONG: The All Meghalaya Muster Roll Progressive Workers Union (AMMRPWU) has called for a state-wide indefinite strike and ceasework from February 24, as a mark of protest against the state government’s indifferent attitude towards their demands.
The decision was taken after there was no response to the notice to strike served by the union last month.
The union had submitted their charter of demands to deputy chief minister in-charge labour Prestone Tynsong and all heads of departments.
Various democratic forms of agitations was also held during the past several months but the government however remained mute to the genuine grievances of the longstanding muster roll workers forcing them to now resort to an indefinite strike, the union said in a statement.
According to the union, the strike will affect the functioning of the different departments and their service delivery to the public.
The Charter of Demands included several demands including regular payment of wages, regularization, Equal Pay for Equal Work, granting of statutory rights for workers like earned and casual leave, EPF, ESI benefits, etc., granting Affordable Subsidized Housing for Workers, proper enumeration of muster roll workers and also seeking assurance from the government that muster rolls should not be scrapped, as was recommended by the Meghalaya 5th Pay Commission.
