Namdong village to take a call on taking back the Thadmynri reserved forest
The dorbar shnong of Namdong will soon take a final call on whether to cancel the agreement signed with the Jaintia Hills Autonomous District Council (JHADC) with regards to ‘Thadmynri’, a reserved forest given by the village to the council.
In a statement issued on Wednesday, Waheh (chief) of Raij Namdong Elaka Nongjngi, Elias Susngi said the dorbar shnong of Namdong in its meeting held on December 28, last year had decided to seek clarification from the JHADC on whether it would continue to utilize or surrender the Thadmynri reserved forest, which was given by the dorbar to the council for plantation and protection of the trees in the forest.
“This was after seeing that the JHADC has neglected the Namdong dorbar shnong and also paving way for private individuals to carry out various activities related to charcoal, stone quarrying, broomstick cultivation in this forest,” he said.
“Therefore in view of this, the dorbar shnong has asked the chief forest officer (CFO) of JHADC to visit the village on January 8 and make clear the stand of the district council on this reserved forest,” he said.
Susngi informed that the dorbar shnong on the same day will also take a final call on whether to cancel the agreement signed with the JHADC on July 5, 1985.
“If the CFO fails to turn up for the proposed meeting on January 8, then the dorbar shnong will accordingly announce that the agreement stand cancelled and that the reserved forest will be under the care and protection of the dorbar shnong,” he stated.
