National Newborn Week 2024 observed in East Jaintia Hills
The National Newborn Week 2024, themed “Optimising Antimicrobial Use to Prevent Antimicrobial Resistance (AMR) in Newborns”, was launched on November 19 during a programme organized by the District Medical and Health Officer (DMHO), East Jaintia Hills, at Khliehriat Civil Hospital.
The event was attended by DMHO, Dr. D. Shylla; District Immunization Officer, Dr. N.P. Suchiang; Medical and Health Officer (Paediatrician), Dr. Henry RM Lamare; CHO, Khliehriat MCH, R. Dkhar; ASHAs, and other health officials.
Dr. Shylla highlighted the importance of preventing neonatal infections to reduce infant mortality, emphasizing nutrition, hygiene, and quality care for pregnant women and newborns. Dr. Lamare elaborated on the risks of antimicrobial misuse and the significance of exclusive breastfeeding. He urged ASHAs to spread awareness and monitor high-risk pregnancies to ensure maternal and infant health.
The ASHAs, led by CHO R. Dkhar, demonstrated the seven steps of handwashing. Other speakers included Dr. N.P. Suchiang, NHM District Program Manager A. Dhar, and PHN Pinky Lawait.
