NDA allies agreed to vote against citizenship bill: Conrad
SHILLONG: A delegation of North East-based political parties led by National People’s Party National President and Meghalaya Chief Minister Conrad K Sangma on Friday urged the NDA allies to oppose against the Citizenship Amendment Bill, 2016 in Rajya Sabha.
“We have requested all of them to support the cause of the people of the North East region, where we also as political parties have opposed the citizenship bill,” Sangma said after meeting the leaders of the NDA allies including Shiv Sena, JDU, Akali Das in New Delhi.
United Democratic Party (UDP) chief and Assembly Speaker Donkupar Roy, Deputy Chief Minister Prestone Tynsong besides leaders from the AGP were part of the delegation.
Stating that the response was very positive, Sangma said, “After discussing with all the leaders, we got a positive response from all the allies who have agreed to vote against the bill, if it is brought in the Rajya Sabha.”
He said the delegation will continue to meet other political parties who have similar stand against the citizenship bill. “We will appeal to them to vote against the bill and to appeal to the Government of India not to table this bill in the Rajya Sabha,” the Chief Minister said.
