NDA dominates Assam by-polls, Congress suffers humiliating defeat
The NDA, led by BJP, dominated the by-elections to five assembly seats in Assam by winning all five seats as the election results were out on Saturday. The opposition Congress and its partners have no wins, indicating a major change in the state’s political landscape.
The by-elections to five assembly constituencies were conducted on November 13.
The BJP secured three seats in the election, with its allies AGP and UPPL winning one seat each. One of the notable outcomes was the BJP’s significant achievement in Samaguri, a constituency that has been dominated by Congress leader Rakibul Hussain since 2001.
In Samaguri, BJP candidate Diplu Ranjan Sarma won by a large margin of over 24,423 votes against Congress candidate Tanzil Hussain. Diplu Ranjan Sarma won 81,160 votes while Tanzil Hussain won 56,737 votes. This victory is a major achievement for the BJP, as it has gained control of a constituency that was previously dominated by Congress for more than twenty years.
Although we are still waiting for the specific number of votes, Diplu Ranjan Sarma’s clear win highlights the increasing power of the BJP in areas typically dominated by other political parties.
In the Behali constituency, BJP candidate Diganta Ghatowar won the election by defeating Congress candidate Jayanta Borah with a lead of 9,051 votes. Ghatowar received 50,947 votes, while Borah secured 41,896 votes. The United Opposition candidate Lakhikanta Kurmi fell far behind, only obtaining 5,093 votes.
In Dholai, BJP candidate Nihar Ranjan Das won against Congress candidate Dhrubajyoti Purakayastha by 9,098 votes. Das won 69,945 votes, while Purakayastha received 60,847 votes, showing another clear victory for the party in power.
In Bongaigaon, the AGP candidate Diptimayee Choudhury, who is an ally of the BJP, won by a huge margin of 35,164 votes, defeating Congress rival Brajenjit Singha. Choudhury received 74,734 votes, whereas Singha obtained 39,570 votes. This victory strengthened the NDA’s alliance presence in Assam even more.
In Sidli, Nirmal Kumar Brahma, a candidate from UPPL (an ally of BJP), secured a convincing victory by beating BPF candidate Sudho Kumar Basumatary with a gap of 37,016 votes. Brahma obtained 95,243 votes, whereas Basumatary got 58,227 votes. Congress candidate Sanjiv Warie fell way behind with just 7,634 votes.
The results of the Assam by-elections confirm the BJP-led NDA’s strong position in the state, demonstrating immense voter trust in the alliance. For the next assignment, students must complete research on a topic of their choice and submit a written report.
