NEET-UG row: Cong holds protests in Assam, seeks SC-monitored probe
AS part of its nationwide protest, Assam Congress on Friday held protests against the Central government over the alleged irregularities in the NEET-UG 2024 exam and demanded a probe under the supervision of a sitting Supreme Court judge.
The controversy over alleged malpractices in the NEET exam intensified on Thursday as several student groups protested, and opposition parties criticised the Centre, even as the government maintained that “isolated” incidents should not affect the many students who legitimately passed the exam.
The cancellation of UGC-NET, amidst the ongoing NEET controversy, has raised questions about the NTA’s ability to conduct large-scale exams.
Leaders and workers of the party under the leadership of Assam Pradesh Congress Committee (APCC) president Bhupen Kumar Borah staged a protest against the NEET paper leak scam at Rajiv Bhawan here.
“The result of the NEET examination was announced on June 4 simultaneously with the results of the Lok Sabha elections. This is mysterious. Now the BJP is trying to hide the irregularities in the announcement of the exam,” Borah said.
“The future of students is in limbo due to the paper leaks happening in the Modi government. This is an attack on the hard work of the students and the expectations of their parents. We will not let this injustice happen to the students. This ‘paper leak’ government will have to bow down,” Borah also said.
“Medical schools are the wealth of our country. The good health of the people depends on the doctors. However, NDA has committed irregularities in the selection of 55,000 medical students in the country. This means that the health of the people of the country is being played by the circle,” he said.
Borah also said the planned corruption in Bihar, Gujarat and Haryana was exposed after the arrests, bullies raised allegations that corruption was taking place in BJP-ruled states in the name of these exams. Moreover, even the highest courts have highlighted the seriousness of these allegations and the BJP’s involvement in the irregularities has undermined the credibility of the entire examination process and jeopardized the future of countless dedicated students,” he also said.
24 lakh candidates appeared for this examination which was held on May 5 in 4,750 centres across the country.
Borah demanded that the investigation of this corruption should be supervised by the Supreme Court.
MLAs Rekibuddin Ahmed, Nandita Das, Assam Women Congress president Meera Barthakur, APCC vice president Babita Sharma addressed lakhs of students in this protest.
