NEHARI & NWA power up Northeast: Intense training on project management & quality control wraps up
The North Eastern Hydraulic and Allied Research Institute (NEHARI), in collaboration with the National Water Academy (NWA), Pune, conducted a five-day intensive training workshop on “Project Management, Project Supervision, and Quality Control” from February 18-22.
The event kicked off with a virtual inauguration by D.S. Chaskar, Chief Engineer, NWA, who underscored the critical role of efficient project management in ensuring timely and successful project execution. The inaugural session saw participation from key officials, including G.L. Bansal, Chief Engineer, BBO, CWC, Guwahati, Abhay Kumar, General Manager, Brahmaputra Board, Basanta Kumar Deka, Chief Engineer, Brahmaputra Board, Asheesh Kumar Singhal, Director, NWA, and Dr. Ranjit Deka, Director, NEHARI, Brahmaputra Board.
The five-day workshop provided participants with in-depth insights into modern project planning techniques, including Work Breakdown Structure (WBS), Bar Charts, Critical Path Method (CPM), resource levelling, and Earned Value Analysis (EVA). Participants also gained hands-on experience with MS Project and Primavera P6, focusing on schedule preparation, resource allocation, and report generation.
The training covered Total Quality Management (TQM), construction safety, advanced construction methodologies, equipment planning, cost estimation, contract administration, financial management, and cost control strategies. A case study on anti-erosion project management was also part of the curriculum, providing real-world insights.

The sessions were led by renowned industry experts and academicians, including Dr. Santu Kar, IIT Guwahati; Dr. Bhabesh Mahanta, Researcher & Analyst, Guwahati; Deepak Chandra Bhatt, Senior Joint Commissioner (SPR-I), New Delhi; Maneesh Rathor, SE(C), FBP, Murshidabad and Sabyasachi Pal, FBP, Murshidabad, West Bengal.
The programme concluded with a valedictory session chaired by Dr. Ranbir Singh, Chairman, Brahmaputra Board. Dr. Ranjit Deka, Director, NEHARI, provided a comprehensive summary of the workshop. Dr. Singh, in his closing remarks, stressed that effective project management, supervision, and quality control are pivotal to organizational efficiency and success.
A total of 25 participants from Brahmaputra Board, Central Water Commission, and Water Resource Departments of various Northeast Indian states, including Assam, Arunachal Pradesh, and Nagaland, received certificates of successful completion, marking a significant step toward strengthening project execution capabilities in the region.
