NEHU-JAC threatens non-cooperation movement over VC’s tenure
The Joint Action Committee (JAC) of the North Eastern Hill University (NEHU) on Tuesday staged a protest demanding the Centre not to grant extension to Prof SK Srivastava as the vice chancellor.
Prof Srivastava’s tenure will end on September 23. The JAC comprises the NEHU Teachers’ Association (NEHUTA), NEHU Non-Teaching Staff Association (NEHUNSA) and NEHU Students’ Union (NEHUSU), have made several allegations against the incumbent vice chancellor and his style of functioning.
“We demand that his (Prof Srivastava) tenure should not be extended beyond September 23,” JAC chairman and NEHUTA president, Prof XP Mao told reporters at the sidelines of the protest.
He said the reason being the poor performance of the present VC as “he has brought down the university to the lowest level in NEHU history.”
Asked, Prof Mao said the JAC will be compelled to intensify its agitation even to the extent of resorting to non-cooperation movement if the present VC fails to step down on expiry of his tenure.
“Our rules are very clear that as soon as the term of the VC expires, the senior most professor takes over. Therefore, we request that the senior most professor of the university should take over until the new VC is appointed,” he said.
Prof Mao however alleged that the present VC has failed to release the list of seniority due to reasons best known to him.
