NEHU VC’s residence, vehicle vandalized amid students’ protest, case registered
The official residence of the Vice Chancellor of the North Eastern Hill University (NEHU) Prof PS Shukla came under attack when a group of miscreants vandalised his home and his official vehicle.
The incident took place on Saturday night amid the ongoing indefinite hunger strike protest led by the North Eastern Hill University Students’ Union (NEHUSU) backed by the Khasi Students’ Union (KSU – NEHU Unit), demanding the immediate resignation of the VC and termination of the Registrar and Deputy Registrar.
“An FIR has been filed by the acting registrar of the university against the incident and accordingly a case has been registered,” SP (City) Dara Ashwagosh said.
He informed that additional forces had been deployed at the residence of the VC.
Asked, the SP said that VC was not present at his official residence when the incident took place.
“When we visited the place of occurrence, he (VC) was also not there,” he said while adding the police are enquiring into the matter including the whereabouts of the VC.
The SP said that investigation is on and no arrest has been made so far.
Earlier, the SP along with the district magistrate had also stopped students from taking out a peaceful march via the official residence of the VC.
The peaceful march was organized by the Research Scholar Forum of NEHU in support of the demands of the agitating students.
President of Research Scholars Forum NEHU, Superior Syngkli has alleged that the VC has gone missing since last night.
“The chief security officer of the VC has assured us that an FIR will be filed since the VC is missing without filing for leave application,” Syngkli said.
Syngkli said the research scholars are extending their full support to the NEHUSU who are demanding the immediate resignation of Prof PS Shukla.
The agitating students had outrightly rejected the invitation of the VC to engage in open dialogue for resolution to their demands.
Earlier, people from all walks of life, especially students from NEHU and other educational institutions, women and NGOs from the state today took part in the peaceful march to express solidarity with the agitating students inside the campus.
The march began with a prayer meeting at the Science Cluster of NEHU and ended with a peaceful march to the Administrative Block, the venue where the students are on indefinite hunger strike for the last 6 days.
