NEHUSU demands VC to fill up vacancies within 6 months
SHILLONG: The North Eastern Hill University Students’ Union (NEHUSU) on Friday demanded the authority of the University to fill up all the vacancies including the post of assistant professors within six months.
Adviser of the Union Rangdajied Marwein told reporters here that the demand was made based on the recent direction of the University Grants Commission (UGC) to all the central universities to fill up the vacancies within six months’ time.
He said the UGC has also warned that it will impose a cut on the grants to the universities which failed to comply with its direction.
“Therefore, we strongly demand the NEHU vice chancellor (VC) Prof SK Srivastava to ensure all the vacancy posts are filled up within this period, failing which we will be compelled to seek his immediate removal for his incompetency as an administrator,” Marwein said.
Asked, the Union leader informed that there are approximately over 100 vacancies which include the post of assistant professors, associate professors and professors in the different departments of the university.
According to him, the failure to fill up these vacancies for the past many years have affected the performance and smooth functioning of the NEHU. “This has also deprived students who wants to pursue further studies,” he said.
Meanwhile, the NEHUSU has also demanded the authority of the University to appoint more examiners for correction of answer scripts to avoid human errors which may affect the academic career of the students.
Earlier, demand for rechecking was also made after most of the under-graduate students have secured less marks on certain papers during the fifth semester exams.
“After reevaluation, students’ marks have increased to double digit and were declared pass in those papers. The new marksheet will also be issued very soon,” Marwein said.
Stating that this is due to error on the part of the teachers, he said “We also warned such teachers not to play with the academic career of the students.”
On the other hand, the adviser however said the Union has decided to suggest the university to appoint more examiners for correction of papers by working out on a teacher-student ratio. According to him, teachers who have to correct bulk of answer scripts are bound to commit error during the process.
