NEHUTA protest against NEHU VC’s refusal to discuss NEP with Academic Council
The North Eastern Hill University Teachers’ Association (NEHUTA) on Thursday took out a protest rally against the failure of the University’s vice chancellor Prof PS Shukla to convene an emergent meeting of the Academic Council to discuss the implementation of the National Education Policy (NEP) in the affiliated colleges.
The rally was backed by Meghalaya College Teachers Association (MCTA), NEHU Students’ Union and Khasi Students Union (KSU) and others.
Addressing protesters before the rally, NEHUTA president Prof Lakhon Kma said that when it comes to academic matters or policies, the academic council is supreme and without its approval, the VC cannot go ahead with the implementation of NEP 2020.
Prof Kma said that there are many colleges which have implemented the NEP and all of them knows there are serious flaws in the implementation of NEP this academic year.
“I would urge the concerned parents and students to ask the VC about the third semester course or study, what will be the structure of the examination. I am sure the VC will not be able to answer,” he said.
Prof Kma said that since the VC refused to convene the emergent meeting of the Academic Council, the teachers of the university along with MCTA and other colleges affiliated to NEHU will go for the signature campaign.
“As per clause 13, it provides that if you get requisition by 1/3 of its membership of the academic council, the VC is bound to call this meeting whether he likes the topic or not as it is not in his hand anymore” said Prof Kma.
“If the VC do not pay heed to our demands, we will go up in arms to make sure that he cannot run this university as if it is his private enterprise. He is not the CEO of the university, we are not his subject,” he stated.
