NEIGRIHMS conducts novel hands-on training on Virtual Autopsy

In a significant development Department of Forensic Medicine NEIGRIHMS, Shillong has successfully completed a comprehensive four weeks hands-on training on Virtual Autopsy from 10th February to 8th March, 2025. A total of five participants comprising faculty and residents across the country took part in the training program which is first of its kind in the country and the region. The program was conducted with support from Department of Health Research.
In his speech during certificate distribution and closing ceremony Prof. (Dr) Nalin Mehta, Director NEIGRIHMS congratulated the participants in achieving the new skill. Prof. Mehta also emphasised on bright future of the new modality and encouraged the participants to take initiative to develop such centres in their respective institutes.
Prof. A. J. Patowary, Head of Forensic Medicine Department informed that NEIGRIHMS is only the 2nd centre in India to perform Virtual Autopsy. Virtual Autopsy is a CT scan-based non-invasive forensic technique that uses imaging to examine a deceased person. It is another way of conducting post-mortem examination without dissection of the body. The addition of this new technology is used in determining the cause and manner of death which helps doctors to deliver more precise reports.
The Department of Forensic Medicine NEIGRIHMS will conduct more such training programs in future for imparting training on Virtual Autopsy to Forensic Medicine specialists in the country.
