Neither assaulted civilians nor vandalised private vehicles in East Jaintia Hills District: BSF
The BSF Frontier Headquarters on Tuesday maintained that they neither assaulted any three civilians nor vandalised any private vehicles in Sonapyrdi, East Jaintia Hills District as alleged by the KSU East Jaintia Hills District and termed the allegation as fabricated and devoid of any merit.
This was clarified in a statement signed by the Public Relations Officer of the BSF.
The Public Relations Officer BSF informed that on Saturday, the BSF Mobile Check Post in Sonapur intercepted 3-4 vehicles transporting sugar from Ladrymbai towards the Kuliang-Umkiang border area.
The BSF personnel requested the drivers of the said vehicles for producing invoice/ bill, or any other relevant documents for the sugar consignments, they failed to produce valid document and attempted to speed away. After a pursuit, the BSF seized one vehicle near Shymplong Bridge, but the driver fled into the jungle area.
Later, the driver returned with some accomplices, appearing intoxicated, and began verbally abusing the BSF troops stationed at Check Post Sonapur. They threatened the troops with violence but the BSF personnel attempted to defuse the situation.
Subsequently, the seized sugar and the vehicle (a Bolero) were handed over to Customs, Badarpur.
The Public Relations Officer informed on Sunday the BSF company commander met local headmen of Symphlong and Sonapur and local villagers to identify the culprits and explain the consequences of smuggling.
The BSF also informed Umkiang local police post and the SP office Khilehriat about the incident.
