NEP 2020 will usher in a fresh start toward education
St Antony’s College Extension, Byndihati in East Jaiñtia Hills District on Tuesday organized the fifth graduation cum farewell celebration at the college campus.
Prabha Shankar Shukla Vice Chancellor North Eastern Hills University who gave the presidential address on the occasion lauded the Don Bosco Society for the service that it has rendered in providing education to the students of not only the state of Meghalaya but the entire north eastern region.
Addressing the graduates and the students of the college Shukhla also reminded the students of the need to management their time properly. In his speech he also said that the National Education Policy or NEP 2020 will usher in a new beginning in the way education in taught in the country and it will also help improve education system in India. The NEP 2020 will especially to advantage of the students and it will be of a great help for the students of the different colleges and universities.
Dr HH Mohrmen who gave a keynote address on the occasion reminded the audience that India is not only a one country with more than billion people (in fact as on the 75th Independence Day, India’s population stands at 1,557,716,239,560). He also said it is expected that India will surpass China as the most populous country by 2024. The other pertinent point is as per Report made by the Technical Group on Population Projections, 2020 constituted by Ministry of Health and Family Welfare youths in the age group of 15-29 years is 27.2 percent of the population as on 2021. Dr Mohrmen in his speech also stress of the need for the government to create employment avenues for the young people of the country.
Speaking on the impact of internet and social media platforms Dr Mohrmen said that many of us spend a large part of our time browsing through our social media accounts and all of us have at least one account on one social media platform. He also referred to a study which found that average daily use of internet by any ordinary users in 147 minute per day or about 2.45 hours per day. This comes to 894.25 hours or 14.9 days in a year. This is a considerable amount of time that one spends online. He also said that it is like a person spend almost half month in a year surfing the different media platform on the internet.
Change of course is what we cannot avoid and the crux of the matter of how we use the internet said Dr Mohrmen. It calls for young people to make the best of use of the technology for one’s own benefit. He also reminded the young people of some youths who become content creator and thereby become social media influencer and have earned a livelihood by doing so.
Others who spoke on the occasion were Fr GS Lyngkhoi, Principal In charge of the extension, Fr Paul O Lyngkot SDB, Salesian Provincial, Shillong, Fr George Maleikal College Administrator.
Students of the college who came from different states of the North East region of India presented different cultural dances on the occasion. The spectators were enthralled by the students who presented their folk dances which include bamboo dance of Mizos, Thougal Jagoi dance from Manipur, Chad Nongrep from the local students and others. The choir group of the college also presents their songs in the gathering. Earlier on the day Fr Lyngkhoi also inaugurated the college indoor hall which includes a gym and other indoor games.
