New book on Khasi Matrilineal Culture released
The book “MEI: Matrilineal Exogamous Institution” by Raphael Warjri, exploring Khasi matrilineal culture, was released on August 10 by Meghalaya’s Deputy Chief Minister, Prestone Tynsong.
The ceremony was graced by several distinguished guests, including Pyniaid Sing Syiem, Chief Executive Member of the Khasi Hills Autonomous District Council, and Promod Boro, Chief Executive Member of the Bodoland Territorial Council.
Other prominent attendees included Pradyot Manikya Debbarma, Chairman of the Arc, Tripura TAADC; Puma Chandra Jamatia, Chief Executive Member of the TTAADC; M Laikaw, Chief Executive Member of the Mara Autonomous District Council; Tuliram Ronghang, Chief Executive Member of the Karbi Anglong Autonomous District Council; C. Lalmuanthanga, Chief Executive Member of the Lai Autonomous District Council; Rasik Mohan Chakma, Chief Executive Member of the Chakma Autonomous District Council; Thombor Shiwat, Chief Executive Member of the Jaintia Hills Autonomous District Council; and Albinus Marak, Chief Executive Member of the Garo Hills Autonomous District Council.
The event also featured key figures like Lamphrang Blah, Chairman of the Khasi Hills Autonomous District Council; Pynshngaiñlang Syiem, Deputy Chief Executive Member of the Khasi Hills Autonomous District Council; and Charles Marngar, Deputy Chairman of the Khasi Hills Autonomous District Council. Additionally, Titosstar Well Chyne, Leader of the Opposition in the KHADC, and other officials from various district councils of Northeast India were present
Published by Riti Academy in collaboration with the Indian National Trust for Arts and Cultural Heritage (Meghalaya Chapter), the book offers in-depth research on Khasi matrilineal culture, incorporating biological insights and a comprehensive list of Khasi clans.
The launch also included the unveiling of a statue of Rev. JJM Nichols Roy, a key figure in the drafting of the Sixth Schedule of the Indian Constitution, at the Lariti International Cultural and Performing Arts Centre.
