NFR conducts successful electric loco trials in newly electrified sections, advancing sustainable rail transport
In a significant step toward enhancing electric traction in its network, the Northeast Frontier Railway (NFR) successfully conducted electric locomotive trials in two newly electrified sections. The trials were carried out between Agartala – Sabroom (112.91 RKM) in Lumding Division on January 29 and between New Coochbehar – Bamanhat (49.81 RKM) in Alipurduar Division on January 30 and 31.
Both trials were executed at maximum sectional speed, marking a critical milestone in the region’s transition to faster, more efficient, and eco-friendly railway operations.
NFR is steadily progressing toward full electrification, aligning with Indian Railways’ vision for a zero-carbon rail network. As of December 2024, NFR has electrified approximately 2,828 Route Kilometers (RKM), achieving nearly 70% completion of its electrification project.
With these successful loco trials, electric train operations in these sections are set to commence within the next few months, enhancing connectivity and efficiency in the Northeast region.
The electrification drive is expected to significantly reduce carbon emissions, minimize reliance on fossil fuels, and cut operational costs, contributing to sustainable railway development. By enabling higher train speeds and reducing greenhouse gas emissions, NFR is paving the way for a modern, eco-friendly, and efficient railway network.
