NFR pushes ahead with Murkongselek–Pasighat rail project, achieves 45% progress amid challenges

The Northeast Frontier Railway (NFR) has reported substantial progress in the Murkongselek–Pasighat New Line Project — a critical infrastructure initiative aimed at strengthening rail connectivity between Assam and Arunachal Pradesh. As of March 31, 2025, the 26.15-km project has achieved 45% physical progress, with an estimated total cost of Rs 1,252.49 crore.
The project, being executed in two phases, is vital for boosting regional trade, tourism, and national integration, particularly enhancing access to the remote border areas of Arunachal Pradesh.
In Phase I (Murkongselek–Sille, 15.60 km), major construction milestones have been reached and earthwork is nearly complete, with 13.75 lakh cubic meters completed out of the total 14.16 lakh cubic meters.
Construction of substructures and superstructures for 18 major bridges and 35 minor bridges is advancing rapidly, with several nearing completion.
Preparations for ballast supply and track linking are underway and expected to commence soon.
Construction of the new Murkongselek station building is progressing well and is approaching its final stages.
In Phase II (Sille–Pasighat, 10.55 km), progress is also steady 3.55 lakh cubic meters of earthwork has been completed out of the targeted 6.85 lakh cubic meters, bBridge construction and casting works are ongoing across multiple sites.
For phase II, land acquisition for the crucial Road Over Bridge at Pasighat Yard is being fast-tracked through continuous engagement with local authorities.
Despite facing obstacles such as prolonged monsoon conditions and localized disruptions, NFR has managed to maintain construction momentum. Recently, the General Manager (Construction) of NFR conducted an inspection of the project sites, directing engineers and contractors to sustain the pace of work while upholding stringent quality standards.
Upon completion, the Murkongselek–Pasighat New Line will not only bring Arunachal Pradesh closer to the national rail network but also drive economic development, support tourism, and foster stronger ties between communities in the northeast and the rest of India.
NFR, under Indian Railways, remains committed to delivering this strategically important project by overcoming challenges with urgency, resilience, and a focus on excellence.
