NGOs ask govt to follow Manipur footsteps
SHILLONG: The Meghalaya Democratic Alliance (MDA) government has been asked to follow the Manipur way to ensure illegal entry and settlement of outsiders in the state is checked.
The demand was made by the four pressure groups – Khasi Students Union (KSU), Federation of Khasi Jaintia and Garo People (FKJGP), Hynniewtrep National Youth Front (HNYF) and Ri Bhoi Youth Federation (RBYF) here on Friday.
In a joint statement, the four groups said that they will continue to demand for ILP.
“Despite of the fact that the state government has done its part by passing a resolution to implement the ILP in Meghalaya but the matter now is pending with the central government,” they said.
Stating that the Union Home Minister had assured to meet the state government after Christmas and New Year celebrations, the pressure groups said the state government is urged to immediately follow up the matter.
On the other hand, the four organizations also lauded the state of Manipur for setting up a temporary office to immediately implement the ILP.
They however added but unfortunately in Meghalaya, it has till date failed to set up the entry-exit points as mandated by the Meghalaya Residents Safety and Security Act, 2016 for checking illegal entry and settlement of outsiders.
“Therefore we demanded the state government to follow the footsteps of its counterpart in order to prevent illegal entry and outsiders in the state,” they said.
