NGOs oppose police action over CAA protest
NGOs from Garo Hills have expressed strong opposition on the action taken by the police against their members for protesting against the controversial Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA).
The issue was discussed at an emergent joint meeting held on June 24. The meeting was attended by leaders of Garo Students’ Union (GSU)-CEC, Garoland State Movement Committee (GSMC)-CEC, Mothers’ Union (Williamnagar), Garo students’ Union (GSU) Eastern Zone, and FKGJP –Eastern Zone.
GSU-EZ president Saljrang Tengrik R. Marak said the meeting has expressed displeasure against the reprehension level by the Williamnagar Police against the members of Mothers’ Union and the Garo Students’ Union for protesting against the controversial Citizenship Amendment Bill and later an Act 2019.
“Since the protest against CAA is state wide protest and pinpointing against particular individuals and organizations and members is amounted to harassment by misusing its official power. Therefore the meeting resolved to condemn the harassment by police to particular individuals and organizations by calling some of their members for interrogation without the FIR being filed,” he said.
He further informed that the meeting also decided to resort for democratic protest if harassment continues by the police officers with their mala fide intention.
