NGOs warn govt of consequences over delay to implement ILP
Anti-influx groups on Wednesday warned both the Centre and state governments of the consequences due the delay to implement the inner line permit (ILP).
The demand for ILP grew louder as the state pays rich tribute to a Jaintia legendary freedom fighter – U Kiang Nangbah on his 158th death anniversary.
Leaders of the Khasi Students Union (KSU), Federation of Khasi Jaintia and Garo People (FKJGP) and others lay floral wreaths at the statue of U Kiang Nangbah erected at Barik point here.
In his speech, KSU chief Lambokstarwell Marngar said, “If the government of India and also the 60 MLAs keep on delaying this issue, let them also understand the consequences from now onwards.”
“We have not demanded from the Centre to give us independence or a seperate constitution but we only demand that ILP should be immediately implemented in Meghalaya,” he said.
He also slammed the BJP-led central government for adopting a delaying tactic to approve the resolution passed by the Meghalaya Legislative Assembly for implementation of ILP in the state.
“This shows that the Centre is underestimating the sentiments of the indigenous people,” Marngar said.
“The union home minister Amit Shah during his visit to Manipur had stated that it would be injustice for the government of India if it does not give ILP to Manipur. But the question I want to ask here is whether our “Hynniewtrep land” is still within the Indian territory. If the Centre still count the Hynniewtrep as part and parcel of the Constitution, it should immediately implement ILP in Meghalaya,” he said.
Apart from ILP, the KSU chief also said that the NGOs will also continue to fight for the other pending issues including the demand to shift the sweeper’s colony from Them Iew Mawlong.
According to him, the high level committee constituted by the state government to find a feasible solution for relocation of the sweeper’s colony, seem to be reaching nowhere.
“We also want to send a clear message to the state government that if it is serious, it should do what is right…If there is any law and order breakdown, they should take full responsibility,” he said.
Others who spoke on the occasion include NESO chairman Samuel B Jyrwa and FKJGP president Wellbirth Rani.
