NGT panel to decide on compensation for victims of coal mine tragedy
SHILLONG: The NGT constituted committee on Thursday said that it would soon come up with a final order with regards to the payment of compensation to the families of the 16 miners who were trapped to death in an illegal coal mine in East Jaintia Hills district last year.
Speaking to reporters here, chairman of the committee BP Katakey said that the interim of Rs 1 lakh recommended by the committee earlier is a very small amount. “We will make a final order on that (very soon),” he said.
Asked, Katakey however said unfortunately only 10 applicants have so far approached the committee. “These applications are under consideration of the different deputy commissioners. I am expecting to get the response of the deputy commissioners on the matter tomorrow,” he informed.
