NHAI assured completion of National Highway 6 repairs by Nov 15, next
The National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) on Thursday assured the High Court of Meghalaya to complete the repair of National Highway 6 in Jaintia Hills region.
The assurance was given by the NHAI to the Court during the hearing of PIL no. 11 of 2022 filed by Kynjaimon Amse versus NHAI and others.
NHAI informed that repair-work has already commenced on NH 6 and it is hoped that all the damage caused to NH 6 during the monsoon season would be repaired by November 15, next.
The Meghalaya Govt also submits that the State PWD (Roads) has already commenced repair-work in several places, now that the monsoon season is coming to an end.
Amse complained that a petition has to be carried to the Court every year for roads being repaired immediately after monsoon season.
The Court directed the State, NHAI and other concerned authorities to be alive to this problem so that there is a plan already in place to undertake immediate repair-works in the event of landslides during the monsoon and to overhaul the roads at end of the monsoon season, to the extent necessary.
The Court listed the next hearing on October 28, next.
Notably, anguished with the non maintainenace and repair the National Highway 6 along East Jaintia Hills District, Amse dragged NHAI to the Court of Law with a Public Interest Litigation or PIL as it is popularly known.
The Division Bench of the High Court of Meghalaya said the grievance of the petitioner is that a large section of NH 6 which connects the northern part of Assam to the south-eastern part thereof through the State of Meghalaya is in very bad condition.
The Court viewed that the petitioner complained of the stretch between Lumshnong and Malidor in the East Jaintia Hills district.
