NIMAS team completes historic first-ever rafting expedition across Brahmaputra
In a landmark achievement, a team from the National Institute of Mountaineering and Adventure Sports (NIMAS), Dirang, led by Col. Ranveer Singh Jamwal, has completed the first-ever rafting expedition along the full 1,040 km stretch of the Brahmaputra. The journey, which started at Gelling village in Arunachal Pradesh and ended at Hatsingimari in Assam, was conducted under the sponsorship of the Ministry of Defence.
The 28-day expedition included 25 days of intense rafting and three days for equipment maintenance. The team faced extreme challenges as they navigated Class 4 and 5 rapids in Arunachal Pradesh, including Ningging, Palsi, Tooth Fairy, and Kodak. As they entered Assam, the rafters encountered massive river currents, shifting water dynamics, and vast stretches that tested their endurance and skill.
Led by Col. Jamwal, a decorated Indian Army officer and mountaineer, the team comprised nine rafters and 14 administrative and support staff. Additionally, local rafters from Arunachal Pradesh and Assam joined the mission to help navigate the river’s most treacherous sections. The journey was a remarkable display of physical endurance, teamwork, and strategic navigation.

Beyond its adventure aspect, the expedition facilitated meaningful interactions with local communities along the river. The team engaged with indigenous groups such as the Memba, Adi, Mishing, and Bodo, gaining valuable insights into their traditions and deep-rooted connection to the Brahmaputra.
The success of this historic expedition underscores the immense potential of adventure tourism in Northeast India. It also highlights the resilience and determination of the NIMAS team, who overcame extreme conditions to accomplish a feat never attempted before.

NIMAS, based in Dirang, Arunachal Pradesh, plays a crucial role in promoting adventure sports and training individuals across multiple disciplines. Col. Ranveer Singh Jamwal, the Director of NIMAS, is a renowned mountaineer with multiple record-setting expeditions, including three successful summits of Mount Everest.
This trailblazing rafting expedition not only sets a new benchmark for adventure sports in India but also paves the way for future explorations along the majestic Brahmaputra.
