No reservation policy for promotions within the Meghalaya Police department
Maintaining there is no reservation policy for promotions within the department, the Meghalaya Police on Friday asserted that promotions are granted purely on the basis of seniority and merit and availability of vacancies ensuring a fair and merit-based system.
This was informed by Assistant Inspector General of Police (Law & Order) Vivek Syiem IPS in a press communique reacting to several allegations regarding recent promotion process from Havildar to Armed Branch AB Asstt. Sub-Inspector (AB ASI).
Syiem informed over the past two years, 1471 personnel of various ranks have been considered for promotion, and all promotions have been carried out in strict accordance with the circular and orders issued by the DGP’s office.
He also said that the entire process is conducted transparently, adhering to the established guidelines from the DGP’s office.
Regarding the recent promotion, the press communique informed the process is carried out strictly in accordance with the Director General of Police (DGP) Circular No. 65/2012 dated 25.09.2012 and there is no requirement for personnel to undergo a cadre course to be eligible for promotion to the AB ASI rank.
The post of AB ASI are exclusively available in the India Reserve Battalions i.e the 3rd MLP (1st IRBN), 4th MLP (2nd IRBN), 5th MLP (3rd IRBN) & the 6th MLP (4th IRBN) and promotions are limited to these specific battalions.
Syiem informed 141 Havildars from all districts and battalions where Havildar posts exist, and submitted their willingness to be considered for promotion.
He also said a Committee formed for the purpose sat on 07.10.2024 which was headed by the DIG (TAP) and attended by the Commandants (COs) of the 1st, 3rd and 6th Battalions, along with Additional Superintendent of Police (Addl. SP) and Deputy Superintendent of Police (Dy.SP) Training & Armed Police (TAP). During this process, the Committee meticulously screened all records to assess the eligibility and suitability, he added.
After conducting a comprehensive review and screening of all service particulars, the press communique said the committee recommended the names of eligible personnel to the Asstt. Inspector General of Police (A) (AIG A) for further consideration and after due process the promotion order was issued.
