Nominations of Naba Sarania, 7 others rejected for 3rd phase of poll in Assam
The nominations of eight candidates, including the sitting MP from Kokrajhar, Naba Kumar Sarania were rejected during the scrutiny of nomination conducted on Saturday, officials of the Election Commission of India (ECI) said on Sunday.
Now 52 candidates are in the fray for the third phase of elections from four seats of Assam- Guwahati, Dhubri, Barpeta and Kokrajhar.
“The nomination paper of Sarania was found invalid during scrutiny and hence rejected,” Kojkrajhar returning officer Pradeep Kumar Dwivedi said.
Sarania, the chief of the Gana Suraksha Party (GSP) who has been representing the constituency as an Independent since 2014, had filed a writ petition in the Gauhati High Court challenging the striking down of his ST (Plains) status by the State-Level Scrutiny Committee, but it was dismissed on Thursday.
Apart from Naba Kumar Sarania, the nominations of four candidates were rejected in the Dhubri constituency, 1 in Barpeta, and the nominations of two candidates were rejected in the Guwahati constituency.
In the Guwahati constituency, Nayan Das (Bharatiya National Janata Dal) and Aripta Choudhury (Independent) nominations were rejected.
With this, eight candidates are in the fray from Guwahati; They are: Bijuli Kalita Medhi (BJP), Mira Borthakur Goswami, Samad Choudhury (BGP), Sejon Goyari (BMP), Amitabh Sarma (Akom Sanatan Bharat Dal), Deepak Kumar Boro (VPI), Kazi Nekib Ahmed (Independent) and Col Gokul Chandra Singha (Independent).
In the Barpeta constituency, the nomination of an independent candidate was rejected and now 14 candidates are in the fray from this Lok Sabha seat.
In Dhubri constituency, the nominations of four candidates were rejected and now 15 candidates are in the fray for the third phase of polls.
April 22 is the last date for the withdrawal of nomination papers.
