North Liberty HS School Principal quits Engineering to become Teacher
For some educated people teaching is a mere rain shelter job while for some it is a mere profession yet for some it is a noble mission but rarely one would be able to meet a qualified engineer to quit engineering to become a teacher and this would sound more of the script of the famous Hindi movie 3 Idiots but this is real and he is no other than the Principal of North Liberty Higher School, Jowai Richard B Uriah.
Uriah revealed this fact of his life known to few while speaking at the 59th Teachers’ Day Celebration at Shillong Public School, Laitumkhrah this afternoon. He was one of the recipients of the State Level Teachers Award.
The engineer turned teacher said that 20 years ago, he never could have imagined being one of the recipients for Teachers Award at this level and thanked the Education Department for conferring upon them this prestigious award today.
Henry Adams once said, “A teacher affects eternity; he can never tell where his influence stops,” he exclaimed.
Uriah said, “Today I understand this better! I believe my fellow teachers who are present here would agree with me. I started my career in life as an Engineer but little did I know that God had chosen and prepared me to be a school teacher. My class mates for engineering school call me the real idiot from the Famous movie 3 idiots! Well today if you ask me, I don’t mind being an idiot if that’s what it takes to make me what I am today.”
He also said that William Arthur Ward once said, ‘The mediocre teacher tells. The good teacher explains. The superior teacher demonstrates. The great teacher inspires.’
As a teacher he learnt very early in life that his main role was not just to tell, explain and demonstrate but to inspire his students, Uriah said that in the wake of corona virus pandemic, all the schools have been closed for the last few months.
With online classes, students and teachers will now be celebrating Teachers’ Day 2020 virtually and salute all his fellow teachers from the State of Meghalaya and the country as a whole who have gone out of their comfort zone in finding ways and means of imparting learning during this lockdown…
Confucius said, “If your plan is for one-year plant rice. If your plan is for ten years plant trees. If your plan is for one hundred years educate children. ”
“Dear teachers let this year’s Teachers day encourage us to keep educating our children. I am also very sure that with the able leadership of our Honourable Education Minister, we will together be able to educate children to even greater heights, because our plan is not just for hundred years but even more,” Uriah appealed.
