The National People’s Party organized a ceremony to commemorate the death anniversary of the founder of the Party and former Chief Minister of Meghalaya & Lok Sabha Speaker (L) Purno Agitok Sangma at the NPP headquarter, Shillong on Thursday. The ceremony was attended by senior office bearers of the National People’s Party as well as members of the National People’s Youth Front (NPYF).

Throughout his career, Sangma rarely lost his sense of equanimity and roots. He waged an untiring battle on the forgotten and neglected issues of the Northeast. In January 2013, he founded the National People’s Party (NPP) with an endeavour to champion the cause of the indigenous people of India, particularly the North East region in order to voice the concerns of the indigenous communities and minorities.

Office bearers who attended the event include Prof. Don Kupar War, Working President of NPP, Babeth K. Sangma, General Secretary i/c Finance & Admin NPP and Nihim D Shira, ex MLA where an inter-faith prayer meeting was held during the ceremony.

Addressing on the occassion, Babeth K. Sangma recalled Purno’s contribution to the State and the country besides his contribution to the foundation of the National People’s Party. He also recalled that PA Sangma’s dream was to unite all the people of the North East.

Nihim D. Shira recounted that Purno Sangma was a great visionary who had groomed many leaders and that he was not only a national but also an international leader. He left an indelible mark of his unique personality and contributed a great deal during his roles as the Chief Minister of Meghalaya and Member of Parliament. By his conduct, Purno Sangma taught all people active in political life that public interest was always paramount.

The vote of thanks was delivered by Kupar Blah, General Secretary, thanking all the members of the NPP and NPYF who were present on the occasion.
