NPP not divided over CAA: Kharlukhi
National People’s Party (NPP) state chief Dr WR Kharlukhi on Saturday denied that there is any division within the party with regards to the issue of Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA).
“There is no division in the NPP. Agatha is saying but it doesn’t mean that the party is saying. I am the president of the party in my state…I am very clear with the stand…we have one stand and as a party we never (supported the CAA),” Dr Kharlukhi told reporters.
He was reacting to a query if the NPP is divided on the issue of CAA since the Lok Sabha MP from Tura Agatha Sangma had supported the CAA in the parliament.
Dr Kharlukhi also reminded that the implementation of CAA could be prevented after the chief minister of Meghalaya Conrad K Sangma convened a meeting with all CMs of the North East states.
Asked what step the party would take to ensure Meghalaya is fully exempted from the CAA, the NPP state chief said, “We are trying our level best but what we need is a powerful presence of the people from North East to be heard in Delhi that is why NPP is built on that. I am having patience. It took us from 1999 to 2018 to come to power in Meghalaya. I will see a day that this will happen in parliament in Delhi.”
