NPP state chief asks headmen not to be afraid of threats
National People’s Party (NPP) state party and deputy chief minister Prestone Tynsong on Saturday asked the traditional chiefs not to be afraid against the recent threats issued by a certain political party because they are being empowered by the autonomous district council (ADC)
He was addressing an election campaign at Laitlyngkot, Nongkynrih for drumming up support to his nephew and party candidate from Langkyrdem-Laitkroh constituency Rahboklang Tynsong.
Tynsong said a certain political party has threatened to drag traditional chiefs (rangbah shnongs) to the court just because permission for holding public meetings was not granted.
“I feel pity for all the headmen but I tell you that the law is there for you, please do not be afraid as you are fully empowered by the district council,” he added.
Referring to the incident at Mawlai, Tynsong said, “My heart hurts when I look at the Mawlai Town Dorbar. After receiving complaints from parents and students, the six candidates (from Mawlai constituency) along with the MTD have unanimously decided not to allow holding of a public meeting as it will only disturbed students, who are preparing for their different examinations. Unfortunately, this was followed by threats during the next day. He dared threaten traditional heads, who don’t even get paid (for their services).”
Slamming the move to file an FIR against the headmen, the NPP state president said, “Stop pointing your fingers at others, first look at your own shortcomings.”
“I urge the people of Nongkynrih Laitlyngkot not to get swayed by such a party,” he added.
He also hailed the KHADC and said, “We have further empowered women organizations within the village. This law has been legislated by the incumbent CEM Pyniaid Sing Syiem in consultation with me and officers of the state government.”
Claiming that the NPP-led government has improved the road connectivity in the state to a greater extent, Tynsong said, “This is reflection of the true love for the ‘jaidbynriew’ unlike those who only know how make big promises whereas in their own constituency the condition of the road is not even fit for a horse cart to ply. Therefore, people should not get easily swayed”
He further assured that the party will ensure the rights and interest of the indigenous people will be protected through the district council.
“This election is very important. There are so many laws we want to bring through the district council to further strengthen and secure the future of the indigenous people,” Tynsong added.
