NPP to decide on Shella seat soon
SHILLONG: National People’s Party (NPP) national president and chief minister Conrad K Sangma on Thursday the party would soon sit to decide on whether to put up a candidate for the upcoming bye-election to the Shella Assembly seat.
The seat has fell vacant following the passing away of former Assembly Speaker and former UDP chief late Dr Donkupar Roy, last month.
The United Democratic Party (UDP) has decided to field Dr Donkupar’s son Balajied Kupar Synrem for the seat.
Asked, Sangma told reporters that it is a decision which his party has to take on whether or not to field a candidate for the Shella seat.
“Yes, we have a lot of respect for Dr Donkupar and it will be an issue that we will be discussing and definitely there will be a consensus build around it and we will wait till party meeting is held,” he said.
Whether the party would consider it right not to contest the bye election, the CM said, “But keeping in mind the coalition we have, it would be in the right interest to move in that direction but then till the party doesn’t sit together, it will not be appropriate for me as a president, the state unit should sit and propose that to me.”
