NPP to field Danggo, Sawkmie from Ranikor and Nongpoh respectively in 2023
The National People’s Party (NPP) on Tuesday announced its decision to field former Assembly Speaker Martin M Danggo and Umsning MDC Macdalyne Sawkmie from Ranikor constituency and Nongpoh constituency respectively in 2023 Assembly polls.
Danggo and Sawkmie were among those joining the NPP during a meeting held in the presence of its national president and chief minister Conrad K Sangma, state president and Rajya Sabha MP Dr WR Kharlukhi, deputy chief minister Prestone Tynsong, cabinet minister Sniawbhalang Dhar and others at the state party office here.
The others who joined the party include former KHADC CEM Manstudy Nongrem, former JHADC CEM Hambertus Nongtdu, former MDC Thomas Nongtdu, former UDP Ri Bhoi vice president Reynold Kharkamni.
Welcoming all the leaders to the party, Sangma said they have joined as they believe that the NPP is working with a cause, a purpose, a commitment and dedication for the people of the state and the region as a whole.
“And I can assure you we will continue to work in the next one year and God willing that the people of the state give us the mandate again which I know that the people of the state will give us in 2023 we will carry forward what we have started and complete the process and (ensure) Meghalaya will be in the top ten states,” he said.
Claiming that the NPP-led MDA government has tried to spread developments to every nook and corner of the state, Sangma said, “Yes it is not possible to give in every situation but roads, bridges, school buildings, offices – that have been neglected for years are finally getting the importance they deserve…”
Recollecting the challenges and difficulties faced by the MDA government during the last four years, the chief minister said a lot of people have doubted that the government would last and survive even for one year but “we are not bothered by these comments and continue to serve the state”.
Stating that when the tough situations came, the NPP also got tougher, Sangma said his government during the last four years has taken up issues that nobody ever dare to take up because of political issues and situations that will affect them during elections.
“I keep telling our team that yes there is an election but there is also a purpose for which we are here. So while we think of elections we must also remember that we have been given this opportunity and time to serve the people and the state,” he said adding “Therefore we have taken up matters and issues that have been very challenging for us but because of the team work, because of the guidance we received from each and every one of you, because of the blessing from above, we are able to move forward.”
He further assured that many issues that have been there for a very long time will be resolved.
Reminding that the MDA government is not a one man show, chief minister said, “…it is not about what the CM wants, it is not just about what the deputy CM wants, it is about what is good for the team, it is about what is good for the state, it is about listening to the MLAs, it is about listening to the MDCs, it is about listening to the party leaders, to the people, the public. If we start to do things the way we feel then I think that is the wrong thing to do. As leaders, we must have ears on the ground, we must have our feet on the ground, we must connect with the people, we must talk to our party leaders, we must talk to our MLAs, MDCs and come to a decision based on consensus – and in this government that is how we have worked.”
Every stakeholders be it civil societies, be it traditional institutions, be the parties, even the opposition, we try to carry people along and try to work and that has been one of the key factors and the key aspects of this government that we always believe in team work and carry everybody along, he added.
