NPP to win in both KHADC and JHADC, says Meghalaya CM
NPP national president and chief minister Conrad K Sangma on Wednesday expressed confidence that his party will win the upcoming elections to the two autonomous district councils (ADCs) in the Khasi and Jaintia Hills region, slated to be held on February 21.
“Every election is different, every election is tough, and there is no question of being over confident. We need to work hard and we are hopeful that things will be positive and we will win the ADC polls in KHADC and JHADC,” Sangma told reporters.
He informed that the party has held a review meeting with the candidates for the KHADC and JHADC polls and said, “We got a positive response. But of course there are challenges and we have to work hard. Our candidates are at the grassroot even as we speak now. So also our leaders are prepared throughout the state and they are working tirelessly for the coming elections.”
Sangma added that the overall preparation from the government point of view is that all steps have been taken to ensure elections to the two ADCs are conducted smoothly.
Admitting that anti-incumbency is something which no government can avoid, the CM however said, “But if you look at the works that has been done by the (NPP-led EC in the) KHADC, large number of bills that we have, so many pending issues that are there were not taken up in the past, were cleared by this current EC. Therefore, one cannot say that they have failed miserably.”
“Yes, there are lots of challenges, lots of issues that are there but many innovative things and many important projects recently the research scholars that they have brought forward and they have funded them to have the entire database and documentation of the Khasi culture, the language in different aspects – these are positive signs of how this particular EC is working in a positive way to take the region and the district council forward,” he stated while adding “Opposition will say many things but this EC has done very well as a lot of pending issues that were there have been resolved, lots more work is left and we will continue to do more work in the future.”
On the attempt to mix religion and politics, the NPP national chief said, “I don’t have any comments on that that is up to the particular political party on how they want to do this but I think our society has always maintained that we always want to keep these aspects of religions away from politics. I think society will decide and people decide, I have nothing to say, I have no comment what kind of politics they are playing or they are not playing, that is up to them but I think at the end of the day the people are going to vote and decide and I am sure people are going to look at all aspects before voting.”
Further, Sangma said that the party is not undermining or overrating any opposition political party.
“It is incorrect for any of us as political leaders, candidates or as a party to undermine anybody or overrate anybody. For us every single opposition is the same. Today all political parties, the Congress, TMC, UDP, and coalition partners are all working very hard. Therefore, I don’t think it is possible for us to say this is the main party as everybody is strong and working hard but we as a political party will go with a mindset that every opposition is strong and we will work hard,” he added.
If the BJP is extending support to NPP in the upcoming ADC polls, the CM however said, “That you will have to ask them because I have no idea what they are planning to do or not do.”
