NPP welcomes one nation, one election
SHILLONG: The National People’s Party (NPP) has expressed support to the move of the BJP-led NDA government to implement the one nation, one election.
“One election is good for the nation because it saves us the expenditure and at the same improves the overall efficiency of the election,” NPP national president and Meghalaya chief minister Conrad K Sangma said.
He was attending the meeting of the presidents of all political parties chaired by the Prime Minister Narendra Modi in New Delhi on Wednesday.
Stating that it is a positive thing but there are also challenges to it, Sangma however suggested that consultation must be done with all the stakeholders to ensure all the ideas are taken in and based on that decision can be made.
“The Prime Minister also reflected the same idea saying that it will be important and this is just a beginning where we are just going to open the subject and consultation will take place at all levels and only when the consultations are done then only decision will be made on how this can be taken forward. The PM said this is not his government agenda but it is an agenda for the nation and therefore it should be taken in a positive manner,” the chief minister said.
During the meeting, issues related to improving the productivity of the Parliament, building a new India in the 75th Independence programme and commitments to celebrate Mahatma Gandhi’s 150th birth anniversary and development of aspirational districts were also discussed.
Chief Minister said he had suggested that productivity of the Parliament can be in two terms which include time productivity and MP’s productivity as individuals.
“From time productivity it is important to ensure that the parties realized and send the message and try to inculcate this culture of participating in the debates rather than creating noise and judging MP productivity by the noise he makes. The person productivity should be judged on how he participates in the parliament. I think that culture has to come in,” he said.
“I also explained how in Meghalaya Legislative Assembly how we normally don’t have this kind of situation and it goes off in a health debate manner and yes we have arguments but they are productive arguments and we don’t stall the proceedings of the House. From that angle, Meghalaya is showing an example to the rest of the country and the parliament,” he added.
With regards to improving the productivity of the Member of Parliament, the NPP chief suggested that each MP should be given an office and enough staff.
