On Spility Langrin’s 4th death anniversary, YFPHR remembers the fight against uranium mining in West Khasi Hills
The Youth Forum for Protection of Human Rights (YFPHR) on Monday appealed to the people of the North Eastern region to join hands together to fight against any forms of mining and land grabbing in the name of development, which violates the rights of the indigenous peoples and their self-determination, on the 4th death anniversary of Late Spility Lyngdoh Langrin, who stood until her death to fight against uranium mining in West Khasi Hills of Meghalaya.
“The courage and will she had during her lifetime have awakened the people of Meghalaya and the North Eastern region. She fought against the Uranium Corporation of India (UCIL), which offered 1.3 crores of rupees each year to lease her land in Domiasiat of West Khasi Hills to mine the uranium,” YFPHR said in a statement.
“On her 4th anniversary, it is high time for the people of Manipur to learn from her movement against mining and question the agenda of the extractive industries, which are now planning to initiate various forms of mining in Manipur and also the ongoing oil exploration in Tamenglong District and other parts of Manipur,” it said.
Furthermore, the YFPHR also appealed to the agencies and companies to stop any forms of mining in the state of Manipur and the North Eastern region in general and to stop the destruction of Indigenous Peoples’ land.
“We also extend our solidarity in observing the Anti-Uranium Day, being observed by the Khasi Students’ Union of Meghalaya every year on the 28th of October in remembrance of Late Spility Lyngdoh Langrin,” it said.
