One-time grant to ‘active’ community quarantine centre: CM
The state government has decided to extend a one-time grant of Rs 5,000 to each active community quarantine centre arranged by the traditional village administration to help prevent spread of COVID-19 in the state.
The decision was announced by the Chief Minister Conrad K Sangma while replying to a zero hour notice moved by Congress legislator from Nongpoh Mayralborn Syiem during the reassembled budget session of the Assembly held here on Wednesday.
“Rs 5,000 will be given to each of the active community quarantine centre as a one time grant from the Chief Minister’s Relief Fund (CMRF),” Sangma said.
It may be mentioned here that many villages have taken initiative to set up community quarantine centres to take care of stranded people who returned to the state.
This was in view of the fact that over 28 corona care and quarantine centres set up by the government are having capacity of only 1,000 beds.
Sangma said free provision kits are provided under the Chief Minister’s Special Grant (CMSG) to all quarantined people.
He said these free provision kits will also be given to villages to take care of those who are staying in the community quarantine centres.
Syiem has demanded the state government to increase the number of institutional quarantine centres to take care of stranded people who returned to the state from different parts of the country.
“I have seen people not following norms and protocols. I am afraid that home quarantine is not safe especially for those coming back from different parts of the country. Therefore, I sincerely urge the state government to increase the number of institutional quarantine centres in the state,” the MLA said.
On this, the chief minister said that it would be next to impossible for the government to institutional quarantining of all returnees.
He however informed that the government has decided to conduct two tests – rapid diagnostic test and RT-PCR – of all returnees.
According to him, such returnees will be kept in quarantine centre till test results come out.
“The RDT and RT-PCR can be very strong mechanism (to prevent spread of COVID-19),” he said.
The CM further informed that a total of 6830 stranded people have returned to the state as on May 19.
He said efforts are on to bring back all stranded citizens.
“I have personally taken up with ministry of civil aviation to permit requisition of aircraft based on payment as many are willing to pay,” Sangma said.
Meanwhile, the CM also said that he has also taken up with the Ministry of External Affairs for bringing back citizens of the state who are stranded abroad.

Business establishment should also be allowed to open in Shillong as we are facing economic crisis. We need to pay salary, bills, etc without earning a single penny for almost two months. Every health protocol should be followed while economic activities are allowed.
