Opp chief whip expresses solidarity with protesting teachers
Opposition Chief Whip, George B Lyngdoh on Friday visited the aggrieved teachers at the protest site. Condemning the use of force against the educators of Meghalaya by the NPP-led MDA government, he said “We have come to express our solidarity and support to the contractual teachers’ who went through a tormenting situation yesterday. It is shocking to see that they have been tear-gassed and at the same time suppressed in a peaceful march for their rights and livelihood.”
“As a party, we strongly condemn the incident. At the same time, our heart goes out to the families, women teachers and children who are gravely affected both physically and mentally because of the incident,” he said
Stating that the government has gone deaf and dumb, Lyngdoh said, “They are not extending any kind of help to the teachers; their bread and butter have been suddenly taken away. The government is devoid of sensitivity and does not care about the people of the state.
As a party, we express our solidarity as we have expressed in the past. The Home Minister, Education Minister and the Chief Minister must express their stand on what the government wants to do with the teachers.”
On the demand of removal of the Home Minister, the AITC leader said, “I think it is a collective responsibility of the entire cabinet to ensure the safety of the people and to provide secure.”
