Opp chief whip files petition before MHRC against Ganesh Das hospital
Assembly’s opposition chief whip, PT Sawkmie on Thursday has petitioned to the Meghalaya Human Rights Commission (MHRC) against the Ganesh Das Government Maternal and Child Hospital for allegedly refusing to admit a pregnant woman recently.
“I urge upon the Commission to step in and take action and also to order an inquiry against the misbehaved staff for not admitting the pregnant woman which has made the woman to deliver a death baby just because she have to wait for many hours to deliver the child,” Sawkmie said in his petition to the Chairman of the MHRC.
The Mawlai MLA further alleged that the pregnant woman had suffered humiliation of being refused admission and turned away by the staff of the Ganesh Das hospital just because she is from Mawlai Mawtawar, which was declared as a containment zone (for tracing contacts of COVID-19 patients).
“It is very unfortunate that staff of the government hospitals are playing with the lives and deaths of pregnant women. This is not the first time, it also happened in the past that the staff are not showing the heart of helping the patients,” Sawkmie stated in the letter.
He requested the MHRC to intervene into the matter to ensure such incidents do not happen in the future.
