Opp chief whip writes to Guv over NEHU imbroglio
Opposition chief whip, PT Sawkmie on Wednesday sought the intervention of the Governor, Satya Pal Malik into the current imbroglio in the North Eastern Hill University (NEHU).
“I urge you to intervene (into) the present situation so that the functioning of the University will come back to normal,” Sawkmie said in a letter to the governor.
He said it is unfortunate that the Joint Action Committee which comprises the NEHUTA, NEHUNTA and the NEHUSU came out to the street and spoke against the failure of the incumbent vice chancellor.
The Joint Action Committee on Tuesday staged a protest demanding the Centre not to grant extension to Prof SK Srivastava as the vice chancellor.
Prof Srivastava’s tenure will end on September 23.
The JAC have made several allegations against the incumbent vice chancellor and his style of functioning.
“We demand that his (Prof Srivastava) tenure should not be extended beyond September 23,” JAC chairman and NEHUTA president, Prof XP Mao had said.
He said the reason being the poor performance of the present VC as “he has brought down the university to the lowest level in NEHU history.”
Prof Mao said the JAC will be compelled to intensify its agitation even to the extent of resorting to non-cooperation movement if the present VC fails to step down on expiry of his tenure. He suggested that a senior most professor should take over till such time a new VC is appointed.
