Opp leader asks MDA govt not to brand Meghalaya as a gambling state
Leader of Opposition Mukul Sangma on Tuesday asked the National People’s Party (NPP)-led MDA government not to brand the state based on activities that will suit the greed of some politicians.
“For God’s sake withdraws from this approach to unnecessarily brand the state of Meghalaya as a state which provides activities which are not acceptable to our ethos, society and culture,” Sangma told reporters.
Stating that the government should refrain from branding Meghalaya as a destination for gambling and all associated vices, Sangma said people would prefer Meghalaya to be known as an educational hub.
“Meghalaya should be known as a destination where parents will be comfortable enough to send their children to pursue their education,” he said adding “Branding our state should not be based on these kinds of activities which will suit the greed of politicians.”
He said that the government has to understand the collateral damage associated with such activities.
“Obviously they are trying to convince the people of the state that look it is going to be regulated in such a manner that the residents of the state including whoever will not be allow to enter the premises but only people coming from outside the state, the tourists that means it’s not a place which is not good enough for people to go,” he added.
