OR Shallam honoured for contributions to indigenous culture
OR Shallam, President of Sein i Ktien Wei Thoh Jaintia, was honoured with the Sanmaan Patra 2025 by the Vivekananda Kendra Institute of Culture (VKIC) for his contributions to preserving indigenous culture.
The award was presented on January 31 during VKIC’s 28th Foundation Day celebration at Gauhati Medical College & Hospital Auditorium, Bhangagarh.
OR Shallam has dedicated his life to safeguarding the Niamtre indigenous faith and preserving traditional cultural practices. As a leader of Seinraij Jowai, he played a key role in countering proselytization and raising awareness about Niamtre beliefs.
He was instrumental in promoting Behdeiñkhlam at the national level and reviving Chad Sukra, a festival halted during British rule, thereby preserving hundreds of traditional dance forms and thousands of indigenous songs.
Speaking to reporters on Wednesday, Shallam thanked VKIC for the recognition and praised its efforts in cultural preservation. “I deeply appreciate VKIC’s commitment to participative research and its role in safeguarding the diverse heritage of Northeast India,” he said.
A retired Associate Professor from Kiang Nangbah Government College, Shallam served for over 30 years in academia. He has held key roles, including nominee on the Board of Management of Tezpur University and a member of the North Eastern Hill University Court.
Shallam has been an active member of Seinraij Jowai for decades, serving as its President for 21 years and contributing to various committees. Since 2018, he has led Sein i Ktien Wei Thoh Jaintia while continuing his work in different advisory and regulatory bodies in Meghalaya.
