Paul Lyngdoh inaugurates the 5th edition of Winter Tales, celebrating culture and sustainability
The 5th edition of Winter Tales 2024 was inaugurated on December 12 by Paul Lyngdoh, Tourism Minister, in the presence of Cyril VD Diengdoh, IAS, Director of Tourism, at the iconic Ward’s Lake, Shillong. The festival, an initiative of the Department of Tourism, Government of Meghalaya, is organised by the Meghalayan Age Limited and curated by Dakti Craft.
Centred around the theme, ‘Balance,’ this 3-day festival focuses on blending modern and traditional practices with an emphasis on sustainability. Running until December 14, 2024, it showcases creative solutions that harmonise progress and preservation, fostering a collective commitment to a sustainable future.
Paul Lyngdoh highlighted the festival’s journey, noting, “The event began humbly but now attracts artisans, ateliers, and weavers from across the 12 districts. It’s nothing short of a miracle.” He thanked the Department of Tourism and stakeholders, urging visitors to draw inspiration from the surrounding greenery to promote responsible tourism. He also announced Meghalaya’s participation in a major tourism festival in Gujarat next February, where the state will be recognised for its efforts in promoting green tourism.
The Go-Green Awards were also presented to honour outstanding contributions to sustainability.
Day 1 featured diverse activities across two stages. The main stage hosted panel discussions on ‘The art of balancing tradition with contemporary,’ while the workshop stage engaged art enthusiasts with sessions on art, storytelling, and attire draping by the Forgotten Folklore Project.
Book launches included Pahsyntiew: A Folktale from Meghalaya by Martin Luther Christian University, adapted by Amayda Eden Syiem with artwork by Casper Syiem, and Ka Sohlyngem and Other Forgotten Songs by H. Teslet Pariat. Additionally, Bird Folktales of Meghalaya for Children and Guide to Birds of Meghalaya were introduced. Culinary expert Adonijah Lyngdoh, winner of Hills on a Plate Season 1, showcased his skills, delighting the audience.
Performances by local talents Na U Bnai, Sur Na Nongkyndong, and Da Minot added energy during the day, while evening performances by Strait Brothers, Jamelle & the Pinefolks, Leo Boys, Jessie Lyngdoh, and Wanjop Sohkhlet captivated the audience.
Launched in 2020 by Conrad K Sangma, Chief Minister, Winter Tales has grown into a flagship event celebrating Meghalaya’s cultural diversity and sustainable tourism practices.
Other dignitaries present included Bajop Pyngrope, MDC of Rambrai-Jyrngam, and Robert Lyngdoh, Chief Administrative Officer of Meghalayan Age Limited.
