PDF rejects citizenship bill
SHILLONG: The People’s Democratic Front (PDF) has registered its strong opposition against the move to implement the Citizenship Amendment Bill 2016 which seeks to provide Indian citizenship to immigrants from Pakistan Afghanistan and Bangladesh.
In a memorandum submitted to the Prime Minister Narendra Modi, PDF president Ivanlumlang Marbaniang said, “The party, which was formed to ensure safety and security of the indigenous people of Meghalaya, has unanimously decided to oppose the implementation of this bill.”
Stating that the bill is threatening the unique identity of the tribal people of the state, Marbaniang said it will cause serious change in the population dynamics of the state which will ultimately lead to regressive economic scenario in the state.
He also said the bill if passed will give rise to ethnic clashes which will disrupt the peace and harmony in the state.
