PM Modi to visit Assam on September 8 for Bhupen Hazarika centenary launch, key infrastructure rollouts

Prime Minister Narendra Modi will visit Assam on September 8, 2025, to attend the inauguration of year-long birth centenary celebrations of music legend Bharat Ratna Dr. Bhupen Hazarika, and to unveil a series of major infrastructure projects. The confirmation came after Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma met the Prime Minister in New Delhi on Saturday.
In their 20-minute meeting at the PM’s official residence, Sarma extended formal invitations for several upcoming milestones, including the launch of the Bhupen Hazarika centenary celebrations, the Assam Bio-Ethanol Plant, and the foundation stone laying of the ₹5,700 crore Guwahati Ring Road and the Darrang Medical College and Hospital.
“The Prime Minister graciously accepted all the invitations,” Sarma said, describing Modi’s upcoming visit as “a proud moment for Assam.”
Posting on X (formerly Twitter), the Chief Minister said: “It was my privilege to meet Hon’ble Prime Minister Shri @narendramodi ji in New Delhi today. I had the honour of inviting him to Assam as the Chief Guest for the inaugural ceremony of Bharat Ratna Dr. Bhupen Hazarika’s birth centenary celebrations.”
Earlier this month, the Assam Cabinet approved a year-long commemoration of Dr. Bhupen Hazarika’s 100th birth anniversary, running from September 8, 2025, to September 8, 2026. Celebrations will take place across major cities including Guwahati, New Delhi, Mumbai, Kolkata, and Itanagar, highlighting Hazarika’s influence across India and beyond.
A 50-member committee, led by CM Sarma, will oversee the centenary events. All Chief Ministers of the Northeastern states will serve as patrons—a gesture that reflects Hazarika’s deep cultural resonance across the region.
“Dr. Hazarika is more than a musician—he’s a symbol of our shared heritage,” Sarma said. “This centenary celebration is a tribute to his legacy, and a way to inspire future generations.”
Key highlights of the centenary year include: A biographical book by author Anuradha Sarma Pujari, to be distributed to 10 lakh readers across India in multiple languages.
A documentary film in Assamese, Hindi, and English, tracing Hazarika’s life and creative journey.
A major infrastructure project in Assam to be named after Dr. Hazarika (to be announced).
Educational programs in schools to engage youth in learning about his contributions.
Beyond culture, the Prime Minister’s visit will also mark major strides in Assam’s development.
The Assam Bio-Ethanol Plant, with a production capacity of 49 KTPA ethanol from bamboo, represents a leap toward sustainable energy and rural income generation. Meanwhile, the Guwahati Ring Road—a Rs 5,700 crore initiative—and the upcoming Darrang Medical College and Hospital will enhance connectivity and healthcare access in the state.
The convergence of these landmark projects with the centenary launch underlines the government’s dual push: preserving Assam’s cultural identity while accelerating its infrastructure growth. With PM Modi set to lead the proceedings, September 8 is shaping up to be a historic day for the state.
