PM Modi unveils visionary bamboo orchids terminal at Guwahati airport
Prime Minister Narendra Modi, alongside Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma, unveiled the design for the new integrated terminal building (NITB) of Lokpriya Gopinath Bordoloi International (LGBI) Airport at the Advantage Assam 2.0 summit on Monday.
This landmark project aims to redefine air travel in the Northeast, positioning LGBI Airport as a world-class aviation hub.
Inspired by Assam’s rich biodiversity, the new terminal embraces a Bamboo Orchids theme, reflecting strength, sustainability, and cultural identity. The innovative design integrates bamboo and orchids, symbolizing the region’s natural beauty while committing to eco-friendly construction. Seamlessly blending with Assam’s landscape, the terminal pays homage to its unique heritage.
Currently under construction, the NITB will be the first of its kind in the Northeast, designed to handle 13.1 million passengers annually (MPPA). The terminal is expected to be operational by the last quarter of 2025, introducing a host of world-class amenities tailored for an enhanced passenger experience.

The T2 Terminal is being developed with four guiding principles bamboo orchids design – showcasing Assam’s rich cultural heritage.
It will have an enhanced passenger-first experience – prioritizing traveller comfort and convenience.
The new terminal will also have a digital-first approach – Incorporating cutting-edge technology for seamless operations and ensuring eco-conscious development and energy efficiency.
The terminal’s architecture celebrates Assam’s identity through artistic elements inspired by the local symbol Kopou Phool (Foxtail Orchid), a symbol of love, fertility, and joy, integral to Bihu dance and Assamese weddings.
Adding to the immersive experience, T2 will feature a Sky Forest, replicating Assam’s lush greenery, and incorporating Gamocha-patterned wall panelling and glass motifs, bringing a touch of Assamese culture into the terminal’s ambience.
