PM mourns death of Shillong Archbishop
SHILLONG: Prime Minister Narendra Modi mourned the passing away of Most Rev Domnic Jala, the Archbishop of Shillong. Prime Minister tweeted he was anguished by the passing of the Archbishop.
Modi said the Most Rev Domnic Jala will always be “remembered for his impeccable service to the society and for his passion towards Meghalaya’s Progress. May his soul rest in peace.”
Archbishop of Shillong Most Rev Domnic Jala, passed away in a car crash in California, United States on October 10.
Expressing his deepest condolences, Chief Minister Conrad K Sangma termed the untimely demise of Archbishop Dominic Jala as a huge loss to the state.
He said Archbishop Jala was a charismatic man of God who led with humanity, love and brotherhood. He had served as a priest for 41 years and as the Archbishop for almost two decades in the state.
“The Archbishop had a close relationship with my late father and my family and was a friend in our time of loss. He was a man of impeccable wisdom and guided me on several issues for the interest of our people. He was an intercessor for our state and his service to God reflected greatly in his service towards our people. He was a leader respected by everyone across different faiths and his absence will be felt by those close to him across the world. He will always be remembered for his wisdom, guidance and fellowship. His demise is a huge loss to Meghalaya,” Conrad said.
Leader of Opposition and former chief minister Mukul Sangma said, “I am deeply shocked & saddened by the sudden demise of our beloved and most revered His Grace, Archbishop Dominic Jala, the Archbishop of Shillong Archdioceses. I, on behalf of myself and my family, convey our deepest condolences to the members and close relatives of the bereaved family and to all the members of Shillong Archdiocese. I pray that our Gracious Almighty God grant us all solace and the needed strength to overcome this irreparable loss and may the departed soul rest in in an eternal peace.”
In his condolence message, chief adviser to the Meghalaya government DD Lapang said Archbishop Jala offered and devoted the whole of his life as a wonderful witness to people through Jesus Christ.
“Professed as a Salesian and an ordained Priest, he is known to me as a Missionary and a loving and loveable Priest. The passing away of Archbishop Jala is a great lost to the Churches and the people of the state as a whole,” the former chief minister said.
