Poisioning of River Umngot is an offence

Amlarem Sub-Division, i/c Sub-Divisional Magistrate Y R Mawlong promulgated Section 144 Cr.PC to prevent large scale poisoning of rivers, streams and other water bodies is taking place within the Sub Division.

The order prohibited indulging in, or resorting to, the act of poisoning of rivers, streams or any other water bodies with the explicit or implicit intention to cause wide spread/large scale destruction of aquatic life within the Amlarem Sub-Division.

The order expressed concern over the discharge of harmful chemical substances and other effluents into Umngot river which flows from Skha Umtalu till Mushai & Skha Mawiang/ Diengrod.

Such poisoning of aquatic bodies has endangered the local, indigenous fish population, flora and fauna besides undermining the local ecology, the order read.
