Police came with intention to eliminate our father: Chesterfield’s son
The eldest son of the slain former leader of the banned Hynniewtrep National Liberation Council (HNLC) Cheresterfield Thangkhiew has accused the state police of coming to their residence with the intention to eliminate their father.
Chesterfield was shot dead at his residence at Mawlai Kynton Massar at around 3 am.
Police alleged that he was attacking the police team with a knife when they tried to enter his house during an operation to arrest him for his involvement in the two IED blasts at Laitumkhrah and Khliehriat police reserve.
His two sons – Grainy Ferrous Greenfield Diengdoh and Olifin Zyircanium Greenfield Diengdoh were picked up and later released by the police.
Speaking to media persons, Grainy however rejected police claims by saying that their father was seriously ill and does not have the strength to fight back.
Chesterfield was suffering from kidney failure. “There was no knife in the bedroom. This claim by the police is nothing but to tarnish our father’s image. Through the raid conducted last night, it is clear that they (police) did not come to arrest but with the intention to eliminate our father,” he said.
Stating that they are not aware if their father was still associating himself with the HNLC, Grainy said this is because most of the time he was at home except when he had some work. He also recalled that on a few occasions personnel from the Intelligence Bureau (IB) had visited his father but there was never a problem until today.
“If at all our father was still associated with the HNLC, the police can always come and arrest him even during day time as he is mostly at home due to his ailment but this sudden raid late midnight have really shocked everybody,” he said.
Grainy said that they were being picked up and beaten up as police thought them to be their father’s bodyguards.
“They were beating us thinking we were his bodyguard. After they took our father in the stretcher, they took us to Sardar PS and from there they tried to take us to Khliehriat East Jaintia Hills. However on reaching Jowai, the police who took us received a phone call and accordingly decided to take us back to Shillong after knowing that we were his children,” he added.
Recalling the incident, Diengdoh said that the raid happened so suddenly around late midnight when everyone was sleeping and all they heard was noise of breaking the door, force entry and sound of a bullet.
“Upon entry the masked police personnel who only whisper in Hindi forcefully took us from the bed and throw us on the floor and cover me, my younger brother and our father with some cloth and started to beat us by kicking and punching and all we heard is the sound of bullet” said Diengdoh.
Diengdoh said that while they were lying helpless on the floor, they could hear the police personnel beating their father before they shot him and after a few minutes they saw their father lying in the pool of blood breathing for life.
“We are shocked to see that they beat and shot our father who didn’t have the strength to fight back as for so long he was suffering from a failed kidney and his right hand was semi paralyzed” he added.
