Leader of Opposition Mukul Sangma on Wednesday said the police organization should not be weaponized by anybody just because they are affiliated to any political party, which is in power.

Speaking to reporters after attending a meeting of state security commission, Sangma said, “The police organization should not be weaponized by anybody to allow them to create that kind of sense of fear to the people in authority by virtue of being affiliated to any political party, which is in power. This is not something good for the future because it will only be a vicious cycle. You do it today, we will do it tomorrow. That is the perception created and when you want to stop it they will say my leader is good for nothing as he is not allowing me to do the same.”

“Therefore, let us ensure that the whole policing aspect is not to any extent diluted by other areas of interest, which revolves around individual interests of settling personal scores or creating some kind of perception to show that he use power because of where he is,” he said while adding that the Meghalaya Police Act, 2010 has clearly indicated the need to ensure that the whole organization is insulated from the tendency of anybody misusing or anybody getting influence politically or otherwise.

Asked, the former chief minister said that the government has to look into this alleged nexus seriously from “the perspective of how there are forces, who tend to influence the people, who are posted in different areas across the state particularly in the western part of the state where police establishments are being used to settle their personal scores.”

Mukul says no question of going back to Congress

Stating that political parties will come and go, Sangma said, “Some political parties will be in power but what is required to be avoided is because this trend if allowed to continue then the perception of the people will be such that we can manipulate and misuse this power if we are in the government. Let us put an end to that thoughts and ideas.”

He said that the law should be enforced in such a way that police is found as a friend of the society and is not influenced by partiality or some kind of organization which can be subjected to manipulation by people, who are in vicious cycle of doing it.
