Polo parking lot among few places in Shillong identified as vending zones
The state government has decided to convert the parking lot at Polo as a ‘vending zone’ to accommodate hawkers and street vendors so that they can restart their livelihood activities.
After a review meeting held on Monday, Deputy Chief Minister Prestone Tynsong informed that the government has discussed the issue related to the identification of proper places for accommodating the hawkers and street vendors in and around Shillong city.
He said a detailed presentation was also made by the Urban Affairs department as the government would like to go for a permanent solution to this problem.
Tynsong however said as a temporary solution, few places have been identified as vending zones for allowing this section of the trading community to restart their businesses. He also informed that the parking lot at Polo will be converted into a vending zone.
“So today we have decided to start accommodating these hawkers and street vendors in the places identified jointly by the deputy commissioner of East Khasi Hills and the urban affairs department,” Tynsong said.
The deputy chief minister also maintained that only hawkers and street vendors, who are registered with the appropriate authorities, will be accommodated in the identified vending zones.
Asked, there are around 300 hawkers and street vendors registered through the vending committee headed by chief executive officer (CEO) of the Shillong Municipal Board and the committee headed by the deputy commissioner.
